The Garden House Foundation fund (GHFF) was formed in September 2008 under the umbrella of the Victoria Foundation by Jim and Jackie Barker.
The primary goals of the GHFF are to provide support to families in crisis and animals in need in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The GHFF fund also wishes to promote childhood literacy as well as recycling.
Each year the GHFF hosts a charity quality used book sale as a fundraiser. The net proceeds are added to the fund, which then provides annual grants to charitable organizations recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency. Cowichan Family Life, Cowichan Women Against Violence and the Duncan SPCA receive grants each year and will do so in perpetuity.
The book sale is held over two days in October at George Bonner School, 3060 Cobble Hill Road in Mill Bay. We are very grateful for the continuing support of staff and students at Bonner School, Frances Kelsey Interact Club, the Cowichan School District and Brentwood College School.
The GHFF has also been involved in other fund-raising activities, including providing fine china place settings for the South Cowichan Seniors and producing Vancouver Island Garden Recipes, containing 100 recipes using local garden produce.
As a fund at The Victoria Foundation, the GHFF benefits by having all of its investment and legal requirements managed by the Victoria Foundation. Over time, as the fund continues to grow, so also do the grants increase. Each year in the Victoria Foundation’s Annual Report, the Garden House Foundation fund’s total is reported along with the total amount of the grants that have been distributed that year.
