Book Sale Information

SPECIAL UPDATE REGARDING THE PERMANENT FUND BALANCE:

As of October 31, 2021 the Garden House Foundation Fund balance was $193,545.

Should you wish to check on the fund’s status as of December 31st each year, please visit the Victoria Foundation’s website. Here is the link to the page showing the yearly financial reports for all funds.
Click on ‘See the Impact’ at the top right. Then go to Publications, Annual Reports and Highlights and 2019 Financial Highlights and Fund Listings. The Garden House Foundation fund appears on page 4.

We are very grateful for the volunteer, business, school and community support that the sale has received. Our main second hand book store suppliers of books this year were Ten Old Books, Bibles for Missions, and W.I.N.G.S. You may be aware that W.I.N.G.S. has permanently closed as of August 2020. We wish to thank owner Marianna Schwab for her support over the years and wish her the best for the future.

Everyone should feel very proud to know that their efforts are ensuring that families and animals in the Cowichan Valley will receive support from the Garden House Foundation fund forever. Over time the grants will grow into the tens of thousands of dollars each year to support the Duncan S.P.C.A., Cowichan Family Life Association and Cowichan Women Against Violence. Thank you all again for your support!

PLEASE NOTE THE OCTOBER 2022 book sale is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 15th and Sunday, October 16th.

George Bonner School
3060 Cobble Hill Road, Mill Bay, B.C.
20,000+ quality used children and adult books will be available. We will continue to have 5,000 children’s books, all for 50 cents!
Directions: Turn west off the TC highway by the light at Petro-Can (just north of Mill Bay) and the school is moments away on your left. Watch for the signs.

PRICES FOR 2022 will be changing slightly after 13 years as follows.

Children’s books 50 cents; pocket books $2; soft covers and hard covers $3. Sets of books and other special books will be available for $5. There will also be a special auction of more valuable books again this year. Minimum bids will be $20.

There has sometimes been confusion about what a pocket book is versus other soft cover books. It’s all about the width of the book, not the length nor the depth. If you are unsure, please ask Jim or Jackie about this at the sale, or ask one of the volunteers at the checkout tables. We are trying to follow the pricing guidelines that apply to new books. New pocket books and other soft covers differ in price as a general rule, with the soft covers costing more.

TO DONATE BOOKS, PLEASE READ THE DECEMBER 1ST POST ON OUR HOME PAGE for details. Thank you for your generous donation!

We support recycling and encourage you to bring your own reusable bags to the sale, but we do have boxes for your use.

We are looking forward to seeing you all again at the 2022 book sale – as usual, the weekend after Thanksgiving!!

Hi JIm, I’m looking for another book! This one is called “Out of Nowhere” by Martin Pegler. If you have a copy I would like to buy it.

    Thanks, Trevor Anderson

  2. Cindy Thomas says:

Is it possible to ask if you have a particular book for sale?

    • Hello Cindy,
By all means, but it will be our memories that we are relying upon to answer, as once the books are processed into their categories for the sale, they get boxed up and go into storage. Each box has its subject written on the outside, but details of what is inside is not, so we have no way of checking without opening up each box, and they are stored in a huge pile in no special order. Our 20,000 books fill up around 800 boxes! Now after totally discouraging you from asking, we should say that it is actually surprising how many authors and titles we do remember seeing! So give it a try…

Hi Jim and Jackie. It was a pleasure to be involved and I’m looking forward to helping out next year. I’ll make sure the dates are in my calendar. If you ever need help with anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Take care!

  6. Gillian Pugh says:

Are you currently taking book donations for the 2021 sale?

    • Dear Gillian, I am pretty embarrassed about finally replying to your question back in October 2020!! So sorry. I definitely did not ignore you on purpose. I need to check the comment section once in a while!! No doubt you have moved on, but we are continuing to take books for the 2022 sale. Please check out the guidelines about what we are taking now. We still are being careful about space as that year without a sale filled our storage space. Thanks for your patience!! Jackie
